Tripp Roth, who was diagnosed with junctional epidermolysis bullosa at birth, died Saturday in the arms of his mother, Courtney Roth, who had chronicled her life with Tripp in the popular blog, "EBing a Mommy."

In a recent interview, Roth said Tripp was "absolutely gorgeous" when he was born, with just a small blister on his head, a few on his back and deformed fingernails. Doctors diagnosed him immediately with epidermolysis bullosa, a genetic disorder that affects 1 in 50,000. he had the most severe form of EB, junctional epidermolysis bullosa, and was missing a protein the binds one layer of skin to another.

Though in early pictures Tripp appeared no different from any other newborn, eventually blisters would cover much of his body and his health deteriorated in other ways. he had to be fitted with a gastronomy tube and then a tracheotomy tube. he endured multiple eye surgeries but, despite the surgeries, Tripp lost his sight after multiple corneal abrasions and tissue growth that ultimately fused his eyelids shut.

There was no effective treatment for Tripp other than bandages and antibiotics to avoid trauma and infections. Roth, a 26-year old divorcee, gave up her nursing career to care for her son with the help of her mother, Anita Hotard.

"We were given a little angel and we have to take care of him," Hotard, 51, said last month. "If he can do it, I can do it ... I don't have near the agony and stress he has."

In a blog post last month, Roth wrote that his condition had grown so serious that his days consisted solely of being in bed, then being held in a rocking chair and then going back to bed.

It wasn't always that way.

"Before he was confined to the rocker, he would play every day, he could drum to the tune of a song like NO OTHER. he would smile, laugh, and melt your heart," Roth wrote.

Tripp, she said, astounded his doctors.

"He is just amazing. I have always said that from the beginning," Roth told ABCNews.com last month. "I have never been sad around him and I try not to cry around him. We've made it to where he is in the happiest environment possible. his spirit and personality are what keep me going."

Roth said she was inspired by her son's strength -- and so were many others.

As of last month, Roth's blog, which Roth began three months after Tripp was born, had nearly 2,000 subscribers and 3 million page views. the Facebook page, "Prayers for Tripp," has more than 38,000 fans. this past summer, hundreds attended a prayer vigil for Tripp in Louisiana and last month, dozens wrote in to ABCNews.com asking that Roth and Tripp be named one of the site's "Heroes of 2011."

Kevin Clash, who is the voice of Sesame Street's "Elmo," was so impressed, he wrote a special song for the boy.

Roth said last month that she was touched by the outpouring of support.

There are "incredible people who pray for Tripp and our family every night," she said. "They say things like, 'He has touched our lives,' "We hug our children a little tighter,' and, 'I have more faith and pray more.'"

Roth's readers have been leaving condolence messages on her blog and Facebook page.

"[K]now that you and Tripp have touched so many lives in such profound ways," one reader wrote. "Tripp will live on in the hearts and lives that he touched."

An edited transcript of that discussion is below.

Tom Crann: I know it may seem simple here, but let's lay out the difference between inpatient and outpatient or ambulatory care, as it's sometimes called.

Dr. Jon Hallberg: well, I think it's as simple as this — that if you are inpatient, you are staying overnight. That's really the bottom line difference there. Ambulatory implies that you walk in and you walk out. So it's a same-day situation.

Crann: okay. now there are a lot more clinical visits than hospital stays on a regular basis. That's the way we interface with the medical system, usually in a clinic visit, whatever that is.

Hallberg: That's right.

Crann: So give us an example of the numbers.

Hallberg: well, they estimate there's something like a 300-to-1 ratio — that 300 people will go to an outpatient setting versus an overnight stay. So the vast majority of our interaction with the health care system is that same-day situation.

Crann: And have the guidelines and protocols and procedures for clinics been as strict as they are in hospital settings?

Hallberg: Not at all. this is really where this is coming from. they looked at ten years of data, and they found that, you know, it's almost like a lost decade — that there was so much focus on what happens in the hospital setting — reducing "never events," that people cannot die, they can't have the wrong part of the body operated on — that we've just sort of forgotten that there's this huge interaction with health care that has been not really looked at.

Crann: now the tracking of hospital errors and the accountability — it's been tracked and made public pretty closely these days in the last few years, but given the volume here of outpatient visits, do we have a good sense of how often errors are happening?

Hallberg: Not at all. in fact, when all of this really became apparent in 1999 when the first study came out looking at these awful events that could happen potentially in hospitals, it was all over the news. And now they're sort of saying... that we just don't have a firm sense of how many people might be dying, for example, from medical errors. So this is a brand new area that's being looked at, and the AMA commissioned a study that looked at dozens of studies over the last decade to try and get a handle on this.

Crann: in a hospital setting, you're talking about operating on the wrong leg or something like that, but what kinds of things are we talking about here in the clinic, for example, what kinds of errors?

Hallberg: they broke it down to the top six errors, as far as categories, and they go from medication errors, such as prescribing the wrong medication or the wrong dose, diagnostic errors, simply making the wrong diagnosis, laboratory errors — for example, getting a critical lab value back and not conveying that to a patient — and frankly, not having the right clinical knowledge for a problem, and then looking at communication issues and administration problems.

Hallberg: No, not yet. So this is a little unusual in the sense that I think they're just sort of stating the case that there is a problem or no doubt that there is some kind of a problem, but we really need now to address it (and look at) how are we going to remedy some of this.

Crann: in your experience, can you point to some examples of good procedures that are in place and are working?

Hallberg: I can think of one great example that takes sort of a laboratory issue and a medication issue and combines them. Many, many people are on a drug called Coumadin or warfarin. It's a blood thinner. And people who have had heart valves replaced or they have an irregular heartbeat, this medication prevents clots from forming. And it's truly life saving, but at the same time, it can make the blood too unsticky, too thin, and that can result in problems. So it has to be monitored very, very carefully. And for years, doctors' offices were responsible themselves for monitoring this. It was a total sort of by the skin of your teeth, gut feeling kind of 'how do you adjust the meds?'

A few years ago, we put a combined group together and we have a Coumadin clinic now through Fairview and the University (of Minnesota). Any one of my patients who's on this medication goes through that. I know that by having pharmacists, people who really understand the nature of this medication, that their actions have saved lives. And I think that's a great example of where we need to do more of that kind of thing in the outpatient or clinic setting.

Soaps that are "pH-balanced" - closer to the naturalpH of skin - are less shocking and won't remove as much surfaceoil, thus helping skin retain moisture, she said.

Lee recommended bathing with a "superfatted" soap, one with extraoil or fat and extra moisturizing capabilities.

Both dermatologists recommended using a good moisturizer from theneck down to the toes immediately after bathing. Lee said inextreme cold weather, he recommends petroleum jelly or ointments tohelp retain moisture in the skin.

Hands are especially susceptible to cold weather. Nails can becomebrittle and the skin fissured or cracked. to help prevent theseproblems, avoid exposing hands to water unnecessarily, Lee advised.Wear gloves outdoors, and use kitchen gloves when doing dishes andother indoor tasks. Babich said she wears her leather gloves in anyweather colder than 50 degrees. Make sure to moisturize the handsafter washing them, the doctors recommended.

Those with dry hands and feet could try soaking them in a littlewater, coating them with petroleum jelly and wearing white cottonsocks and gloves at bedtime, Babich said.

For the lips, another common problem area, she recommended non-waxyproducts. Waxy products help prevent moisture loss, but they won'tdo much to help lips that are already dry, she said.

The dermatologists also recommended using a humidifier to add somemoisture to the air at home.

In extreme cold weather, skin also can be susceptible to injury.It's important to cover exposed skin, the doctors advised.

“Cotton is very breathable, and it helps moisturizers penetrate into the skin better,” Chapas said.

To prevent dryness from occurring in the first place, Chapas said people should try to limit excess hand washing in favor of using alcohol-based sanitizers, because soaps and other detergents can be drying.  when it is necessary to wash your hands, use lukewarm water instead of hot.

For hands that have been severely affected by winter weather – think red, ashy and cracked – applying lotions and other skin products can be irritating, even painful.  Chapas said covering the cracks with liquid bandages can help with the stinging.

“for really bad, cracked, fissured hands, skin glues can be helpful,” she said. “Band-Aid makes a liquid bandage that can heal the skin.”

However, if the problem is not going away, or spreading, it may be a sign of a more serious condition, like psoriasis or eczema.

“If you’re using moisturizers, and the condition is still spreading, and your skin is cracked, see a physician,” Chapas warned. “Don’t try to treat it at home.”
